Tips for Effective and Safe Removal of Mold from Plasterboard

Posted on: 25 June 2015

Plasterboard refers to a panel that is made by pressing gypsum plaster pressed in the middle of two thick sheets of paper. This material is very good for making interior walls since it is easy to install. However, mold may grow on these plasterboards if they are exposed to moisture for an extended period. This article discusses some useful tips that can help you to remove this mold effectively and safely:

Maintain Very Good Ventilation

Mold has been known to have several adverse health effects like causing people to cough or have a running nose. As you attempt to clean it off the plasterboard, it is likely to become airborne and you may breathe it in. That is why you need to take the precaution of maintaining very good ventilation so that you reduce your exposure to this airborne mold. Keep all windows open and run a ceiling fan if you have one.

Protect Delicate Items

It is advisable to clear the area of all furniture and any other items that may hinder your movements as you work. You may also need to cover any items that cannot be moved. Use newsprint and tape it down so that any cleaning agents that spill do not damage your delicate items. Keep a rag handy so that you immediately remove any drops that spill as you work.

Pick a Cleaning Agent with Your Kids or Pets in Mind

There is a huge variety of cleaning agents available for use during mold removal. Some are natural while others are artificial. Artificial cleaning agents may cause respiratory problems (such as wheezing) to children and pets since their bodies are not as strong as those of adults are. It is advisable to pick a natural cleaning agent like baking soda or vinegar since these natural products will have no adverse effects on children or pets.

Accelerate the Drying Process

Do not spray excessive amounts of cleaning agent mixture onto the plasterboard (until it drips off the wall, for example). Mold grows due to moisture accumulation so wetting the wall may inadvertently worsen the problem. Use a fan to make the wall dry faster so that moisture does not remain in the area you have cleaned.

When you implement the tips above, you will be able to rid your plasterboard of any mold that had grown there. Remember to follow the user instructions provided with the cleaning agent you used to remove the mold from the wall. To learn more, contact a company like Betaboard.
